
It's a New Year - To Plan or Not to Plan? That is the Question (Part 3 of 3)

To quickly recap Part 1 and Part 2.. My good friend, Ken, with some guidance from me, had assembled a detailed business plan for 1996 and had acquired the client rights and assets of the company he previously worked for from the bankruptcy courts. With the business plan complete, he embarked on the most challenging component of any business... the actual execution of the plan. Execution became his Strategy. He excited his new team about their new plan and opportunities. He was masterful at the execution, creating employee engagement and accountability throughout the organization. He guided the execution every day, creating a detailed list at the end of each day as to what had to happen the next day to keep their progress on track or sometimes what had to be done to get them back on track. He held weekly meetings with his Executive team. This consistent attention to the Execution of the plan ultimately resulted in massive success.
In 2001, a little less than 6 years after Ken launched Instrumentation Engineering, he sold the company to Flextronics (Nasdaq:FLEX) for 300 Million. Let me remind you, that his journey to success all started with a plan.
